Australian audiences clearly can’t get enough of Marvel’s brilliant Guardians of the Galaxy, as the space adventure took the top spot for the second weekend in a row with $4.28 million. Critical and audience response has been overwhelmingly positive so far, with many calling it the best Marvel film to date. A sequel has already been announced for 2017 so we can expect the well-deserved popularity of the Guardians to continue growing in the coming years.
Coming in second place was feel-good culinary dramedy The Hundred-Foot Journey starring Helen Mirren. The film did quite well in advanced screenings last weekend and took in an impressive $2.11 million in its first official weekend. The other major new release, Sylvester Stallone’s action sequel The Expendables 3, only just managed to take the third place with $1.79 million. The first two Expendables films were able to find some financial success, but it’s now clear that Stallone’s luck with the series has run out, as the film also bombed in its US opening weekend.

This week sees the release of the much anticipated comedy sequel The Inbetweeners 2. The television series has a huge fanbase and the first film was well received back in 2011, so the Australian-set sequel should do quite well. Keep an eye out over the next few days for our review of the film and our interview with the boys. Also being released is Swedish comedy The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, which is an adaptation of the popular novel of the same name by Jonas Jonasson.
