The boys are back! After taking the biggest opening day of any comedy film in UK box office history, The Inbetweeners 2 has now taken the top spot in its opening weekend at the Australian box office. Fans have been loving the latest adventure of Will, Simon, Jay and Neil, and reviews have been mostly favourable (including our own, which you can read here). The film took the top spot away from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which had another strong weekend, landing in second place. The brilliant space adventure is nearing US$500 million worldwide and has become the highest grossing film of the US summer season.
One of the biggest success stories of the weekend was the premiere episode of the 8th Season of Doctor Who, which was screened in cinemas around the world. The episode was particularly special because it is the official introduction to Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor. The screenings managed to take a solid $629,219 around Australia, which is particularly impressive given that it was only showing in select locations for a limited number of screenings. Doctor Who is a certified worldwide phenomenon, and we can only hope that more television series start showing episodes in cinemas, as the high quality of many of today’s shows warrants a larger presentation. There’s something for everyone opening in cinemas this week! There is Australian crime drama Felony starring Joel Edgerton, Woody Allen’s new romantic comedy Magic in the Moonlight starring Emma Stone and Colin Firth, young adult drama If I Stay starring Chloe Grace Moretz, and Australian sci-fi Predestination starring Ethan Hawke.
