Melbourne’s beloved Astor Theatre to close in 2015

Astor 2

In news that will sadden cinephiles around the country, it has been announced that the Astor Theatre in Melbourne will close its doors in May of 2015. The single-screen repertory cinema has been screening a diverse program of films since 1982, mixing the latest hits with the classics of years gone by, often screening 70mm prints. The cinema has been a Mecca for film fans who want to revisit old favourites or see the latest hits. Seriously, have a look at the Astor’s upcoming program and try to name another Australian cinema that provides content so varied in genre and era on a regular basis. You’ll struggle.

Due to complications regarding dealings with the building’s landlord, the owners of the business have no choice but to cease operations in 2015. This is incredibly disappointing for fans of sophisticated movie programming, as it is becoming increasingly harder to see classic and cult films on the big screen. So much time, love and dedication goes into the making of each film, and it’s ridiculous to think that some films cease to be screened in cinemas after only a few short months on screens. The cinema is the best way to experience films, and each generation deserves the chance to discover or re-discover the classics on the biggest screen possible. This is not even to mention the stunningly beautiful architecture of the Astor. As you can see from the photos below, the theatre boasts one of the most beautiful interior and exterior designs of any classical theatre in the country.

Don’t miss your chance to head to the Astor before it closes. The upcoming schedule genuinely has something for everybody, from a weekly double bill of the Sean Connery James Bond films, to the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, or even a Wes Anderson double bill. Experience this special part of Australia’s cinema history before it is too late. You can read a detailed explanation of the closure at the Astor website here and you can sign a petition to save the theatre here.
