What To Watch: The Iris’ Weekly TV Picks (18th – 21st September 2014)

Thursday

Clueless, Eleven, 9:30 pm AEST

An oldie but undeniably, a goodie. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd and the late Brittany Murphy, Clueless offers a satirical insight into the glamorous life of ultra rich teenagers. You may wince and gag at Cher’s precocious behaviour but the heartwarming ending and nostalgia-inducing soundtrack are sure to win you over.

Cutie and The Boxer, SBS 2 9:30 pm AEST

Following the lives of renowned ‘boxing’ painter Ushio Shinohara and his devoted wife Noriko, Cutie and The Boxer is a touching exploration into their 40 year marriage and the chaos that Ushio’s struggle for artistic recognition brings upon it. Directed by Zachary Heinzerling, this documentary offers a funny, intimate and candid perspective on art, sacrifice and marriage.

Friday

QI, ABC, 8 pm AEST

If the usual Friday night selection of football and drab rom-coms doesn’t exactly speak to you, look no further than Stephen Fry’s hilariously ridiculous ‘quiz show’, QI. Joined by his usual gang of intellectual idiots, this episode explores the topic of illness, injury and infection… or at least it intends to.

Mulholland Dr., SBS, 11 pm AEST

Directed by the outrageously obscure David Lynch, Mulholland Dr. is a peculiar tour de force that follows two young women in their quest to solve a mysterious car accident. Like all of Lynch’s work however, nothing is what it seems in this bizarre masterpiece

Warning: Do not watch if you intend to sleep afterwards.

Saturday

Anzac Girls, ABC, 10 pm AEST

If you missed out on the final installment of this fascinating mini-series then you’re in luck – the ABC is showing it once again. Recounting the rarely told stories of Australian and New Zealand nurses serving at Gallipoli and the Western Front, this finale is an intense, fearsome experience that shatters preconceptions of the role of women in WWI.

Apocalypse Now Redux, SBS, 8:30 pm AEST

Based upon Joseph Conrad’s acclaimed novella Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now Redux follows the story of Captain Willard, a special ops officer who has been sent to Cambodia to kill the renegade Colonel Kurtz. Directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, Apocalypse Now Redux offers a profound yet aesthetically pleasing perspective on the hidden horror of the Vietnam War. Stars Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen.
