The Armageddon Expo dropped by Melbourne this weekend, providing a fun environment for geeks to well, ‘geek out’ on their favourite fandoms and share their obsessions for all things television, sci-fi, mystical and comical with other fans. On the first day, Michael Hogan of Battlestar Galactica, Skyrim, Mass Effect fame spoke in front of a packed crowd. Here’s some of the best bits from his panel at the event:

You did voice acting for Mass Effect 2 & 3, are you much of a gamer?

It’s not that I’m not interested in it, but no I’m not gamer. I have to research and look at the games before they come out but I certainly have no skills as gaming goes. You know Fallout Las Vegas? When it first came out, one of my son’s buddies said, ‘I can’t get too far into the game because I can’t stop shooting your dad’.

They kept it truly a secret who the final five were in Battlestar Galactica, and the legendary story goes that the day you received the page, your reaction was shall we say excitable.

That’s right. When they first started doing the show, when they did the mini-series and the first season, I did first say that ‘God I am forever glad I am not a Cylon’. When Ron who was a first class act and flew up and said I was going to be a Cylon, I did not agree at all. We didn’t necessarily have it out, but I didn’t. Mind you over the years of shooting Battlestar, I very seldom disagreed with anything they wrote for Tye, and on the odd time that I did, when I called Ron, because I never call, he would always respond right away.

Were you ever afraid of Colonial Tye being killed off?

No, I wasn’t. When I got the part, the writer’s said they had no idea where they were going with the script. They knew they were going to decommission the ship and that he had history with Adama but they had no idea where the character was going. Throughout season one, I was unsure if they would bring Tye back into season two, but it was season by season. There was always the possibility that he would be.
