According to Variety Magazine, the yet-to-be-titled third installment of Captain America may see the billionaire Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) play a key role in bringing the Civil War storyline from Marvel’s comics to the big screen.

The actor is reported to be “in final negotiations” to join Chris Evans in Captain America 3, slated to begin production in Spring for a 6th May 2016 release. Marvel’s plan to reboot the Civil War story in its comic books will not only support the plots of existing Marvel Universe franchises but could even support the launch of new franchises over the next seven years.

The plot will pit Stark against Captain America’s alter-ego Steve Rogers (Evans), as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act. Stark essentially becomes a villain of sorts, which will provide Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth ‘Avengers’.

Downey has been open about wanting to remain in Marvel’s cinematic universe beyond his current contract that expires after the third ‘Avengers’. And he has told Variety – Toronto in early September that currently “there is no plan for a fourth Iron Man“. A weighty inclusion in the next Captain America film may further that claim.

Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Captain America: The Winder Soldier, will return to helm Captain America 3. The brothers are working on the script with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Russo told Movies.com last month, ‘I can’t divulge who is going to be in the film, but I think fans are going to freak out when they hear about it’, clearly hinting at Downey being in the next sequel.
