HBO announces new Game of Thrones mixtape with Snoop Dogg, Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, and more

catch the throne

While HBO prepare for the April 12th premiere of the fifth season for fantasy epic Game of Thrones, they have announced that the second in their Catch the Throne mixtape series will be released for free on Soundcloud ahead of the big day. It’s all about bringing the show to life through contemporary styles of music, and while the first mixtape stuck mainly to hip hop – with the likes of Big Boi, Common, and Wale – the new Catch the Throne will draw on a number of different genres, keeping consistent with hip hop but spicing it up a bit with some metal.

Featuring on the upcoming mixtape will be artists and bands like Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Yandel, Ty Dolla $ign, Killswitch Engage, Mushroomhead, Mastodon, and more.

HBO have also given us our first listen to material from the mixtape, with acclaimed emcee Talib Kewli stepping up to deliver “Lord of Light”. While the song’s title references the fire god R’hllor – closely associated with Melisandre and Stannis Baratheon – the rapper has sprinkled a good array of references for TV show fans to get excited about.

Let’s just hope this mixtape is better than the first one.

Head to the official Catch the Throne Soundcloud page HERE, where you can hear Talib Kweli’s “Lord of Light”, listen to the first mixtape, and also stream the upcoming mixtape for free when it is released on March 17th.

Game of Thrones’ fifth season will premiere on 12th April 2015 on HBO
