SXSW Documentary Short Review: Love Has No Age (USA, 2014)

lovehasnoage

Love Has No Age should be renamed “Love Has No Boundaries”. The documentary short is a blissful romance story spanning over four decades. It’s also a beautifully-shot film and a warm slice of pure joy.

The film is directed by Eli Born who has previously directed music videos for the likes of: Jack White, Iggy Azalea and Beach House. The story goes that rock photographer, Ron Raffaeli met the gorgeous and free-spirited Charlene Peters whilst shooting Jimi Hendrix in the sixties. The two were in love and had a happy relationship for several years.

But this tale didn’t end with a “happily ever after”, at least not in the way that most people expected. Charlene Peters became enamoured with Jim Baker and joined The Source Family cult. Peters left Raffaeli and changed her name to Isis Aquarian. These two former young lovers would not see each other for over 40 years.

Love Has No Age depicts the pair’s reunion and it’s obvious that there is still a bond and sense of mutual affection there. It is touching to see the two recreate old photos from the sixties. Aquarian is a sweet hippie and Raffaeli is a charming man and while they look like they could’ve had a happy life together, they each found a different kind of delight in being apart. Lovely.

Review Score: FOUR STARS (OUT OF FIVE)
