After the record-breaking success of the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, there was no way Activision was going to leave Spyro the Dragon on the bench for long. Good news, PS1-era platforming fans — your fave purple dragon is making a comeback.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy will launch on PS4 and Xbox One on September 21 according to Activision’s announcement overnight. The collection includes remastered versions of the series’ first three titles Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. All three titles were originally made by developer Insomniac Games who, in the intervening years, have been responsible for a number of other popular titles including Ratchet & Clank, Sunset Overdrive and the forthcoming PS4 exclusive Spider-Man, also launching in September.
Handling these remasters is developer Toys for Bob who are notable for creating Activision’s Skylanders toys-to-life franchise. Skylanders is set within the Spyro the Dragon universe.
All three games have been “remade from the ground up,” according to the press release from Activision and feature “improved environments, updated controls, brand-new lighting and recreated cinematics.” They then go on to claim that the game’s cast of characters have been “creatively re-imagined with additional flair,” so take that as you will. It’s possible the game’s were just too Late 90’s X-Treme for modern audiences and needed their characterisations tempered somewhat. Further, the remasters will contain “full analog stick support and smooth camera handling,” and Activision are even going an extra step, confirming a reimagining of original composer Stewart Copeland’s soundtrack.
