Australian Box Office Report: Alien: Covenant takes the lead from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

It’s been a pretty big opening weekend for at least two new release films, which both occupy the top two spots on the box office ladder this week.

Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant opened this weekend and promptly took over the no. 1 spot (last week held by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) , earning $3.95m in its opening week.  This is the 6th film in the Alien franchise, and, timeline-wise, follows the events that occurred in 2012’s Prometheus film, but before the original Alien.

From sci-fi to comedy, the film in the no 2 spot on the box office ladder this week was Snatched.  It made $2.89m at the box office (with a screen average of roughly $9k), and is a welcome return to film for Hollywood’s actual Golden Girl, Goldie Hawn (her last appearance in a film was in 2002’s The Banger Sisters).  The success of this film is probably also due to Amy Schumer’s current star power, and its mother-daughter storyline, a perfect release for the Mother’s Day weekend.

Still, if you were to imagine life at the Russell-Hawn home, it’d probably be filled with big smiles all round and a dip in a pool full of money.  Although knocked off its no. 1 spot this week, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, which features Hawn’s husband Kurt Russell, remains in a good position at no. 3 on the box office ladder.  It earned $2.72m this week, and has already earned a total of $26.98m since its release 3 weeks ago.  Year to date, only 2 other films have done better after just 3 weeks at the box office; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Beauty And The Beast.

Last week’s other new release, Get Out, premiered quite well, but has since dropped to no. 5 on the box office ladder.  It made $965k this week, screening at 81 less screens. It took its no. 5 spot from Going in Style, which has dropped off the top 10 list.

After 8 solid weeks in cinemas, Beauty and the Beast remains in the top 10, this week hanging in at no. 9, earning $311k.  It’s made an incredible $47.5m since its release.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and John Wick: Chapter Two premiere properly this weekend. The former got flogged in the USA, maybe it won’t be the same in Australia?
