The Australian box office saw the highly anticipated sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire claim the number one spot in Australia over the weekend, bringing in $12.475 million on 579 screens from Thursday 21st November to Sunday 24th November. The film took in $2.6 million on Friday alone, thanks to sold out midnight screenings around the country.
This is a 34% growth from the opening weekend of the first film and bumps last week’s winner Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa out of the top spot to number two, followed by the Doctor Who one day special which made an impressive $1.5m. Thor 2, meanwhile, continues to perform strongly at number four and Gravity sits at number eight in its eighth week on the charts.
This echos the results internationally, with the film taking in the highest November opening weekend in history in the USA, with the expected Friday to Sunday results at US$161m, up slightly from $152m from the first film. The film also looks set to bring in $146.6 million internationally in its opening week.
Though the film was not supported by 3D ticket sales, the film was released in IMAX format which is included in sales figures.
