Held at Sydney’s City Recital Hall earlier this month, the Screen Music Award – staged jointly by APRA AMCOS and the AGSC – honoured composers across 13 categories, with a mix of first-time recipients and returning award winners. Cezary Skubiszewski, David Hirschfelder, David McCormack and Antony Partos were among those on the winners list.
Cezary Skubiszewski took out three Screen Music Awards from six nominations. He won Best Music for a Documentary for the highly acclaimed Once My Mother and Best Soundtrack Album for The Broken Shore. His composer / producer son Jan Skubiszewski shared the award for their collaboration on Serangoon Road (Episode 6) in the Best Music for a Television Series or Serial category.
Academy Award nominated composer David Hirschfelder won the Feature Film Score of the Year for his work on The Railway Man, which takes his total Screen Music Award tally to six awards.
Composers David McCormack and Antony Partos won the category of Best Original Song Composed for the Screen for their collaboration on Don’t Let Go from the ABC hit series Rake.
Best Television Theme, went to Burkhard Dallwitz for his work on the crime drama Fat Tony & Co, Roger Mason won the category of Best Music for a Mini-Series or Telemovie for The Outlaw Michael Howe. Composer Russell Thornton secured his first ever Screen Music Award in the Best Music for Children’s Television category for his work on Get Ace (Series 1).
Renowned composer Ashley Irwin opened the show by leading an orchestral medley of classic television ads including ads from Aeroplane Jelly, Tooheys New, and AAMI Insurance, kicking off the ceremony with a whole round of laughs and cheers from the audience.
