BBC First British Film Festival Announces Full Program Line-Up For 2015

The BBC First British Film Festival has announced its full line-up of for 2015, featuring 31 films from across the British Isles. Opening the festival will be Paolo Sorrentino’s highly anticipated Youth, which follows two old friends, a retired composer (Michael Caine) and film director (Harvey Keitel) on vacation at a prestigious hotel in the Swiss Alps. Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Man Who Knew Infinity, a retelling of mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan’s life, will close the festival.

Other films also featuring include Spooks: The Greater Good, the big screen adaptation of BBC spy thriller Spooks starring Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones), Kill Your Friends, which follows a young record label rep as he works his way through his cutthroat industry, and The Program, about the controversy surrounding Lance Armstrong and his cycling career.

Strongly featured this year are films focussing on inspirational and courageous women, such as Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette, an intense drama that follows the fight for women’s voting rights and starring an ensemble cast which includes Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep. Similarly, Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert tells the story of traveller, writer, archaeologist and political attaché for the British Secret Service, Gertrude Bell, while Dare to be Wild tells the true story of Irish heroine Mary Reynolds, a prodigy in the field of landscape design.

Other featured films include Andrew Haigh’s 45 Years, a powerful study of relationships and inner turmoil, and Brooklyn, a sweeping romance about a young Irish immigrant making her way to New York in the 1950s, as well as many more films from a range of British directors.

The 2015 BBC First British Film Festival will take place nationally at Palace Cinemas throughout October and November. Tickets are on sale from 30 September from www.britishfilmfestival.com.au.
