It’s not often that a game leaves me open mouthed in awe at its beauty — games like Horizon Zero Dawn and The Witcher III have elicited a smaller, less impressive inhale, but Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom absolutely took my breath away. The anime style of the game is simply phenomenal, and travelling through the casino-based world of Goldpaw was a brilliant experience. Games Preview: Soul Calibur VI Will Make A Man Out of You

The Soul Calibur series makes its long awaited return in 2018, after a six-year layoff. Soul Calibur V featured brilliant gameplay, and an all-star cast, and included fan favourite Assassin’s Creed character Ezio Auditore – joining a long line of guest appearances from the likes of Heihachi Mishima, Darth Vader, Spawn, Link and Kratos. Known for its sheer ridiculousness and over the top action, the newest Soul Calibur retains all the things you know and love about the series. Games Review: Kingdom Come: Deliverance (PS4, 2018) offers a deep and realistic, yet fun and captivating medieval experience

Kingdom Come: Deliverance attempts to give players a realistic medieval action-RPG, complete with a dense and diverse open world. Being heavily based on historical fact, the experience is mostly aimed at history buffs, but can also be enjoyed by casual fans thanks to its capable combat mechanics. Games Hands On: Dusk (PC, 2018): Bringing Quake back

Amongst the litany of genre revivals going on in the indie games space right now, there’s one or two that are appearing more than others — Metroidvanias and ultra-hard, skill-centric platformers. Both are born of genres with audiences long-starved starved for content, and it means that interest is high. But, if I may, there’s a third genre I’d like to throw into this mix: the Quake-like. Games Preview: Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire: Old school RPG crunch and the deep, blue sea

One of the harder asks in this gig is playing a hundred hour RPG for a preview piece. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, like its predecessor and the historic Black Isle Studios RPGs that are its inspiration, is a deep and multifaceted creature which makes diving in without a tutorial a bit daunting. What I found in the few hours I sat down with Pillars of Eternity II was an RPG that isn’t content to merely dredge up your memories of Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale to great nostalgic effect. It could, easily, and you might even forgive it for doing so, but it never does. Instead, it takes multiple modern day, open world RPG tropes and finds interesting ways to fold them into a 20-year-old design philosophy.
