Production has now officially begun for The Mule, the next project directed by critically acclaimed actor and director Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino, Unforgiven). And sadly no, there’s no relation to the Australian film of the same name.
Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Imperative Entertainment, The Mule will see Clint Eastwood in front of the camera in addition to being behind it, starring alongside actors such as Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Michael Peña (Ant Man), Dianne West (The Lost Boys), Alison Eastwood (Tightrope), Taissa Farmiga (6 Years) and Ignacio Serricchio (Lost In Space).
Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, an elderly man facing foreclosure of his business, who has recently acquired a job that requires him to drive. Upon discovering his involvement in a Mexican drug cartel as a mule, his responsibility is soon increased as he is made a handler. While Earl’s money issues are a thing of the past, he may have attracted problems of a more dangerous nature, as DEA agent Colin Bates is hot on his tail. As Earl’s past mistakes catch up to him, a cat and mouse game soon becomes a journey of redemption that will decidedly end before; or after Earl is caught.
The Mule marks Eastwood’s return on both sides of the camera since he starred in 2009’s critically acclaimed Gran Torino. Directed from a screenplay by Nick Schenk (Gran Torino). Eastwood also serves as producer under his Malpaso banner, along with Tim Moore, Kristina Rivera and Jessica Meier, and Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas. Dave Bernad, Ruben Fleischer and Todd Hoffman will serve as executive producers, while Imperative’s Entertainment’s Jillian Apfelbaum will co-produce.
With the film primarily shooting in Georgia and New Mexico, Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film upon its release, with a date to be confirmed. But we would guess late 2019.
