E3 2018: Just Cause 4 gets a big new gameplay trailer during Square Enix’s press event

Just Cause 4 has been one of the surprise hits of this year’s E3 conference. Less a reimagining of the franchise’s core tenets and more a substantial leap forward for the tech that drives the series, our latest look at the game promises an adventure that’s crazier and more creative than ever.

Rico is headed to the nation of Solice, an idyllic area ruled over by a despot named Gabriela and her PMC called The Black Hand. Because he must destroy cruel dictators wherever he finds them, Gabriela ends up on Rico’s shit list and the explosions begin in earnest.

Just Cause 4 features a number of upgrades of the previous installment, including a far larger map and improved vehicle mechanics. But the big draws are twofold: First, new active extreme weather conditions like tornados and thunderstorms could prove to be costly for Rico, or a perfect opportunity to wreak further havoc on his foes. Second, the game’s familiar grapple mechanic has been retooled for greater flexibility and creativity, with improved ease of use for new players and a wealth of new experiments to try for returning veterans.

The game is running on the new engine that Avalanche built for Rage 2 which makes it the best looking Just Cause game yet. Everything has a humid, misty look about it. I mean, if you’re going to build a new engine for a AAA publisher like Bethesda, you should definitely make the most of it. Good work saving a buck there, Avalanche.

The best news of all is that you’ll be playing it soon. Just Cause 4 drops December 4, 2018 on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC.
