Start stocking up on your supply of tissues now, as the first trailer for new documentary He Named Me Malala has been released online and it looks like a real tearjerker.

Directed by acclaimed documentarian David Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman), He Named Me Malala is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was ambushed by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot while making the trip home from school in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. Malala and her father were targeted for speaking out about and advocating for girls’ education, with the attack sparking outrage from Malala’s supporters across the globe. Thankfully she survived, and now, nearly three years later, Malala is a leading campaigner for girls’ education as a co-founder of the Malala Fund.

In his new film, Guggenheim details how Malala, her father Zia and the rest of her family are committed to fighting for the right to education for all girls worldwide. The documentary grants a unique inside glimpse into this extraordinary young woman’s life-from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education, to her impassioned speeches at the UN, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers.

If this first trailer is anything to go by, He Named Me Malala is set to be just as inspirational as its subject. Consider us excited. He Named Me Malala is yet to receive an Australian release date. To learn more about the film, and the important work of Malala Yousafzai, head to their website.
