Gary Oldman is unrecognisable as Winston Churchill in the Darkest Hour trailer

Winston Churchill has been a popular character of late, with his ferocity represented by John Lithgow in his critically acclaimed performance in The Crown, to Brian Cox‘s interpretation in Churchill.

Now “The Father of the Nation” is in the hands of veteran Gary Oldman – if you are even able to tell it’s him – in the new trailer for upcoming biopic Darkest Hour.

Directed by Joe Wright, who helmed the critically acclaimed films Atonement, Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina, the official synopsis for Darkest Hour reads:

Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

The film also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup, and our own Ben Mendelsohn.

Darkest Hours will be released in selected cities on November 22, 2017 and is distributed by Focus Features.
