Google Maps is letting you live out your IRL Mario Kart fantasies right now

Thinking about heading out for a Saturday drive? Even if you weren’t, you should because Google is making your dream of competing in real life Mario Kart come true right this very second.

If you log into Google Maps on your phone or tablet device right now, you can put it into a special mode available only today called Mario Time. Mario Time will turn the app into a living, breathing Mario Kart race — your icon will now look like Mario in his go-kart, you’ll get sounds and alerts from the beloved racing series.

Why is this happening? It’s March 10! Or MAR10. See? It’s a date … thing. Whatever, you can have Mario Kart in Google Maps and that absolutely rules. Don’t ruin this for me, you jerks.

So how the hell do you get this? You’ll need the Google Maps app on your iOS or Android device for a start. If you already have it, make sure it’s updated to the latest version. If you can tick both those boxes, simply open the app and look for the Super Mario coin box with a question mark on it in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. That’s it! Mario Time is activated! After that, Mario’s all yours for the whole week. Plan a road trip and go for gold. Here’s a helpful image to show you what to look for.

Please drive safely and do remember that the police will fine you for littering if they catch you throwing banana peels out the window. Please also remember that your insurance will not cover damages to your vehicle in the event that you are struck by a blue shell. Have fun, everyone!
