It’s official: there are just two seasons left of Game of Thrones

Though long rumoured and assumed based on interviews with the creatives behind the hit TV series Game of Thrones, today HBO made it official. According to Variety, HBO’s programming chief Casey Bloys has confirmed that the 8th season of the show will be its final bow.

The confirmation came during the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, California, where Bloys affirmed the assumption when asked whether the 8th would be the last season: “Yes, I think (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss) have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do.”

He went on to re-confirm the delay of the 7th season, acknowledging that this would make them ineligible for the Emmys next year, and said that there have been talks for potential prequel and spinoff series, though “there are no concrete plans”, nor does he expect there to be anytime soon.

Game of Thrones airs in Australia on Showcase.
