Love Serenade to open the Melbourne Women in Film Festival’s 2018 Program

The Melbourne Women in Film Festival (MWFF) has recently announced its 2018 festival program. The festival will take place from 22 to 25 February across Melbourne’s CBD, including venues such as ACMI Federation Square, Hoyts Melbourne Central and RMIT University.

The MWFF honours and celebrates the work of women throughout all disciplines in the industry, including directors, writers, producers, cinematographers, sound designers and editors. The program will include over 30 films, also including new releases, Australian classics and short films.

MWFF’s four-day program will open with the Australian classic, Love Serenade. As the winner of the Golden Camera (Shirley Barrett) at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival and nominated for 2 AFI Awards, Love Serenade stars Miranda Otto, with an all-female creative team in writer/director Shirley Barrett, producer Jan Chapman, cinematographer Mandy Walker, and finally editor Denise Haratsis.

The screening will be followed by a ‘Love Songs and Dedications’ after-party where audiences can send their own messages to the ones they love whilst listening to relaxing and romantic tunes. Wrapping up the festival is Sophie Mathisen’s, debut feature film Drama. Financed through crowdfunding, Mathisen acts as the star, writer, director and producer, with her sister Dominique Mathisen acting as co-producer.

MWFF’s final night will wrap up with a post-screening short film awards ceremony and celebration. Other festival highlights include the 2017 AACTA nominated film, Don’t Tell, a film that covers the ongoing trauma of sexual abuse, and one’s quest to bring justice to a crime, 10 years after the fact. The film is  directed by Toni Garrett and starring actors Jack Thompson, Aden Young and Rachel Griffiths. The ‘Music in Motion’ program presents a series of films where music is more than just the soundtrack including director Rachel Perkins’ One Night the Moon (2001) starring musician Paul Kelly, and The Was (2016), Soda Jerk’s collaboration with Australian musicians The Avalanches.

The MWFF will run from 22-25 of February across specific venues in Melbourne’s CBD. For more details, head HERE.
