Martin Scorsese in talks for George Washington biopic

Oscar Award winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, The Departed) is in early talks to direct the gritty George Washington biopic The General from Red Granite Pictures.

The script is the work of Assassin’s Creed writers Adam Cooper and Bill Collage. Red Granite’s Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland will be producing.

The story centers around General George Washington, who must lead a dying army to fend off a band of brutal mercenaries during the Revolutionary War.

Providing Scorsese fills the role, he will be replacing director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler), who was previously attached to direct and produce through his Protozoa Pictures.

Back in 2012, Aronofsky, who had a first-look deal with Paramount at the time, was expecting the studio to buy the project, which he described as “an Unforgiven-like tale” centered around Washington. Aronofsky has since left the project.
