Andy and Lana Wachowski have never achieved the same level of success as they did in 1999 when they unleashed The Matrix on the world. This is fair enough, given the fact that very few directors would ever be able to repeat the originality and mind-blowing innovation of a film as good the The Matrix. The Wachowskis have directed two Matrix sequels, Speed Racer and the critically admired but commercially unsuccessful Cloud Atlas since their 1999 sci-fi classic.
The siblings are again returning to the world of sci-fi next year with Jupiter Ascending, an original big-budget special effects epic starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum. The film has had a slightly troubled production, having been delayed from being released this year until 2015. The trailers released so far promise an intriguing and original universe as well as an awesome supporting cast, which includes Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth and the always brilliant Sean Bean. The latest trailer, which Warner Bros. released this week, is even better than the others. If the film turns out as good as this trailer makes it look, the Wachowskis could be returning to their Matrix-era glory. Fingers crossed!
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
