Michael Bay’s Transformers series has found all kinds of success since the first film opened in 2007. The 2009 sequel Revenge of the Fallen was even more successful than the first, despite being a critical bomb. The third film, Dark of the Moon, was an improvement on the second but was still considered overly-complicated and too long.
Despite claiming to be done with the series after the third film, Bay has returned to direct the fourth – Transformers: Age of Extinction, which comes out in June. The Superbowl TV spot which aired earlier in the year got everyone’s attention, particularly through the inclusion of the dinobots. The first full trailer has finally dropped, and it is more of what we have come to expect from Bay. In fact I would not be surprised if someone told me the trailer was made up of scenes from the first three films. It’s very generic. However, the dinobots look cool, the CGI looks spectacular and Mark Wahlberg looks to be a welcome replacement for serious ‘artist’ Shia LaBeouf. Some relief may also come in the form of the ever-brilliant Stanley Tucci and the reliable Kelsey Grammer.
So if you’re a fan of Bay’s first three Transformers films, you’ll probably love Age of Extinction. But if they weren’t your cup of tea, this film looks unlikely to offer anything that will change your mind, but we at The Iris are of open minds, and we’ll let you know our verdict when the film is released!
In the meantime, take a look at the just-released trailer here and make up your own mind!
The film is released in Australian cinemas on June 26th. http://www.facebook.com/TransformersAU
