Pokemon Sun and Moon announced on series’ 20th Anniversary

Following a leak yesterday afternoon, Nintendo have used their latest (and very short) Nintendo Direct broadcast to announce Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. The next titles in their venerable RPG franchise and will launch towards the end of the year.

The news arrived in Australia on February 27th, marking the series’ 20th anniversary to the date. The games themselves were revealed a bit early after fans discovered key art and trademark applications in a European trademark database.

Pokemon Sun and Moon will become the latest games in the main series of Pokemon titles, the last being Pokemon X and Y which came out in 2013. Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were released a year later but were 3DS remakes of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, released in 2003.

We don’t know a whole lot about these new games just yet, though it is expected that Magearna, a legendary Pokemon that will turn up in the next Pokemon movie to release in Japan, will be the first Generation 7 creature.

The reveal comes shortly after Nintendo announcing that Pokemon RedBlue and Yellow would all be coming to the 3DS Virtual Console and that they would be using the new Pokemon Bank application, which lets players trade their creatures from game-to-game, including Sun and Moon.
