It’s been a long wait for Whovians around the world, but thankfully it’s almost over. In under a month we will have the premiere of the 8th series of Doctor Who. Let that sink in. As well as being the beginning of a new series, the premiere is also the first episode of the Peter Capaldi era. Fans wait with cautious optimism that Capaldi will be able to live up to the incredibly high standards set by Matt Smith, David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston since the show was re-started in 2005.
It has just been announced that the feature-length premiere episode, titled ‘Deep Breath’, will be screened in cinemas around the world on August 23rd, as the 50th Anniversary episode ‘The Day of the Doctor’ was in November last year. As well as Capaldi and returning companion Clara (Jenna Coleman), the new episode will take place in Victorian London and sees the return of The Paternoster Gang – Madam Vastra, Jenny and Strax.
Executive Producer Steven Moffatt released the following statement about the premiere:
“Last November the Doctor didn’t just conquer the world on television, he did it in the cinemas too. And like the show-off he is, he can’t resist another go – one taste of the silver screen is never enough. On August 23rd the new Doctor will begin his new adventures on BBC One and in cinemas all over the world. Movie-land beware – Capaldi is coming to get you!”
Doctor Who keeps growing in popularity with each new series and it shows no sign of stopping yet. The screenings of ‘Deep Breath’ will no doubt be a huge success and will hopefully lead to more episodes being shown in cinemas. We’ll keep you posted when locations are announced for this incredible event!
