Film Review: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (USA, 2017) is loaded with emotional battles to win and lose

With every new Star Wars film comes the obvious comparisons to its predecessors. Yes there are epic space battles between X-Wings and Tie Fighters. Yes there are wild twirling lightsaber fights. And most importantly there is the deep, spiritual and emotional journey of our characters (some more than others). These have always and will always be the staple of Star Wars films. Where director Rian Johnson succeeds is in trying to balance the good versus evil and the light versus the dark and for a film in the middle of a trilogy that can be tricky. And oddly enough it’s the middle of this movie that seems to be unsettled whilst its beginning and ends seem to stick the landing. ... Continue Reading

Film Review: Logan Lucky (USA, 2017) is a calculated, charming caper

It’s been a few years since director Steven Soderbergh had a feature film on the big screen but with Logan Lucky he makes a welcome return in this rollicking comedy-heist. It would be easy to boil this down to a red-neck dirty overalls wearing, whiskey swigging, pick-up truck driving version of Soderbergh’s own hit Ocean’s Eleven (and Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen) but that’s unfairly simplistic, even if it is true. Film Review: Silence (MA15+) (USA/JAP/TWN, 2016) not one of Scorsese’s best, but an illuminating experience

If there’s one filmmaker who, in my opinion, hasn’t made a bad film, that filmmaker would be Martin Scorsese. Venturing from genre to genre with ease (who else can go from the family fantasy Hugo to the dark comedy The Wolf of Wall Street just like that?) and always applying professional care and passion within his projects, Scorsese is a filmmaker whose work I will definitely watch, no matter its subject matter.... Film Review: Midnight Special (USA, 2016)

From Writer and Director Jeff Nichols, an emerging American auteur who has already slammed two home runs with the brilliant Take Shelter (2011) and the film which arguably reignited Matthew McConoughey’s career, Mud (2012), comes his most ambitious film to date – Midnight Special, which opens in Australian cinemas today....
