Amazon Prime Video and CBS team up to “Make It So!” for Star Trek‘s Picard spin-off

With filming on the as yet untitled Picard Star Trek spin-off series underway, this week it’s been announced that Amazon Prime Video will, under a multi-year agreement with CBS, be the exclusive streaming home of the new series in more than two hundred countries and territories outside the U.S. and Canada, including here in Australia.

Each episode will be available on Amazon Prime Video within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere. Though, with Star Trek: Discovery remaining on streaming service Netflix, Australian Trek fans will be left to double up on their streaming subscriptions if they want to keep up to date.

The new series will see Sir Patrick Stewart reprise his role as the venerable and much loved Jean-Luc Picard. Not too much is known about the series so far, only that the series will follow Picard in the next chapter of his life. That being said, some casting news has filtered through. Alongside Stewart, the series will also star Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful), Isa Briones (American Crime Story: Versace), Santiago Cabrera (Salvation), newcomer Evan Evagora and Michelle Hurd (Blindspot).

Alex Kurtzman, who is serving as Executive Producer on the new series, has dropped a couple of hints about the new series, but nothing too substantial, only that Picard will be living a very different life to the one he knew on the bridge of the Enterprise. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Kurtzman has also suggested that the show will be “slower, more meditative” than his series Star Trek: Discovery, and that it will act more as “a character study about this man in his emeritus years”.
