APRA AMCOS have once again put the call out to budding artists and songwriters to vie for the coveted APRA Development Award. Aimed as a career boosting initiative, a $15,000 cash grant will be awarded to up and coming artists, composers and songwriters in each of the following categories:
- Popular Contemporary (3 separate grants will be awarded, which covers pop, rock, blues, folk, hip hop and R&B)
- Country
- Jazz
- Classical
- Dance/Electronic
- Film and Television
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
This year will see the introduction of the Smugglers of Light initiative, awarding a $12,000 grant to a talented Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander musician or media practitioner. This particular grant will commemorate the memory of Eli Westlake, who tragically lost his life at age 21.
2017 also sees the inclusion of a dance/electronic category, giving up and coming producers a shot at nabbing the coveted cash prize, and a chance at securing a massive career kick-start.
Head of APRA AMCOS member services, Dean Ormston, reiterates that the award represents APRA’s continued commitment to “developing the next generation of music creators”, and is aimed at supporting artists and industry professionals as they begin to launch their careers.
The industry professionals behind the judging panel include the likes of Lior, Catherine Britt, and John Ferris just to name a few.
