APRA AMCOS announces the 2020 Art Music Awards finalists

APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre have unveiled the finalists for the 2020 Art Music Awards, streaming live on Tuesday 8 September. 

 The annual event recognises distinctions in the fields of composition, performance, education and presentation of Australian art music.

In light of the current COVID restrictions, this year’s Awards will be streamed as a virtual event on APRA AMCOS’ YouTube channel, premiering Tuesday 8 September, 7:00pm AEST.  

A record-high 278 nominations were received across the 13 recently reworked categories, suggesting that the pandemic hasn’t hindered the engagement of musicians and fans alike.  

The organisers have praised the diversity of this year’s nominees, with finalists coming from both metropolitan centres and various regional areas of Australia. Emerging composers have also been commended, some of whom have forged their career outside of professional organisations. 

Nominees include Cat Hope, Julian Day, Amanda Cole, Linda May Han Oh, Netanela Mizrahi & Guwanbal Gurruwiwi and more.

The 2020 Art Music Awards categories are: 

  • Work of the Year – Large Ensemble
  • Work of the Year – Choral
  • Work of the Year – Jazz
  • Work Work of the Year – Chamber Music
  • Wof the Year – Dramatic
  • Work of the Year – Electroacoustic/Sound Art
  • Performance of the Year Jazz – Improvised Music
  • Performance of the Year  – Notated Composition
  • Award for Excellence in Music Education
  • Excellence in Regional Area
  • Excellence in Experimental Music

The ceremony will also introduce the Luminary Awards, awarded for long-term contributions by individuals and organisations. Additionally, the ceremony will also present the Richard Gill Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music, as selected by the APRA Board of Directors.
