Film Review: Deadpool 2 (USA, 2018) Gives Us The Merc With The Mouth And A Warm Fuzzy Heart

Considering the risks 20th Century Fox took in greenlighting Deadpool, the 2016 film was released and became a global success, it seemed the risk now fell on the shoulders of its sequel. Deadpool 2 markets itself as “it feels bigger” and in some ways this is true and in others it’s not. The film leans heavily into its overt crassness, gore and ridiculousness but also comes away with some surprising character development and warmth for our merc with the mouth. When First Girl I Loved screened in September 2016 as part of the 4th annual Queer Screen Film Fest in Sydney, I was initially disappointed by the film’s second half (read more in my original review). It wasn’t because it was bad film, far from it, however, it was because I had no idea what to expect and was left with the feeling of being cheated by the movie’s second half.
