Film Review: Silence (MA15+) (USA/JAP/TWN, 2016) not one of Scorsese’s best, but an illuminating experience

If there’s one filmmaker who, in my opinion, hasn’t made a bad film, that filmmaker would be Martin Scorsese. DVD Review: Hitman: Agent 47 (MA15+) (USA, 2015)

Hollywood hasn’t had the greatest track record when it comes to translating video games into films. There’s been but a handful that have been worth watching, the Resident Evil series, Lara Croft Tomb Raider and cult classic Mortal Kombat all rank amongst the good ones. With Hitman: Agent 47 this is actually a reboot and has nothing to do with the 2007 film Hitman (starring Timothy Olyphant in the lead) other than originating from the same game. With this film endeavouring to take a little bit more from the source material to fuel the story which adds a notch to its belt above its predecessor. But more importantly, does this bomb, or does it have enough juice in it to reinvigorate the franchise?... Continue Reading

Film Review: National Theatre Live: Hamlet (UK, 2015)

Over the last couple of years thanks to the wonderful team at National Theatre Live they’ve been bringing some of the greatest theatrical plays from the National Theatre in London to cinema screens across the world. For those who are unable to see these plays in the flesh, seeing them via NT: Live has been a treat, and this one is no exception. With this production of Hamlet being the fastest selling show in British theatre history much of that due to its lead actor’s star power, getting to see this in the comfort of a cinema without having to scramble for tickets or be bound by the tyranny of distance is fortuitous indeed....
