Deus Ex: Mankind Divided gets release date, bogus preorder deal

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided finally has an official release date. That’s good! It’s also offering one of the most poorly thought-out preorder deals in recent memory. That’s bad.The game will arrive February 23, 2016 on current-gen consoles and PC but if you’re a fan of the series who wants all the goodies on release, you’ll need to navigate what Square Enix are calling the Augment Your Preorder campaign.

It almost feels like someone got preordering and a Kickstarter campaign mixed up. Essentially, there are five tiers of preorder, with new goodies and bonuses being unlocked based on the amount of pre-orders worldwide. As the number of preorders “worldwide, in select countries” rises, the better the rewards.

Tier One, which kicked off today, lets customers choose one of three in-game loadouts. Tier Two lets you choose between a soundtrack sampler or an artbook, Tier Three unlocks an in-game mission, Tier Four lets you choose between a comic book or a novella based on Deus Ex and finally Tier Five will see the game released four days early once reached. Bogus, right? Holding certain content hostage is not a great incentive for getting me to preorder your game (which I still want to play, by the way).

If you want to skip all the mucking around and get all the content, you can simply preorder the collector’s edition which also comes with an Adam Jensen statue, along with other exclusive goodies.
