Dragon Quest 10 and 11 become first known games for the Nintendo NX

Dragon Quest 10 and 11 are in development for the Nintendo NX, the mysterious new machine from the venerable publisher. The news comes from a Square Enix news conference in Japan overnight (translated by Kotaku).Dragon Quest 11 is revealed around an hour or so into the presentation and is also being developed for the PS4 and 3DS. There was a slide that showed the New Nintendo 3DS specifically but it’s unclear at this point whether that specific hardware will be required to play it. Then, at around an hour and ten minutes, some PS4 gameplay is shown. DQ11 is currently scheduled for a 2016 release.

Dragon Quest 10, on the other hand, is an MMORPG that first appeared on the Wii back in 2012 before being ported to Android, 3DS, Wii U and PC.

Square’s entire presentation comes to around an hour and forty minutes speaks at length on the state of the Dragon Quest franchise across consoles and handhelds. You can check it out in full via the YouTube embed above (it’s in untranslated Japanese though so be aware of that).

Late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the existence of the NX system back in March, referring to it at the time as a “dedicated game system.” He made it clear, however, that Nintendo wouldn’t speaking about the system with any specificity until well into 2016. At this stage, it remains unclear whether Square’s announcement means Nintendo is further ahead than we realise or if developers even have access to dev kits yet.

Square Enix’s news conference follows the announcement of spin-off series Dragon Quest Builders earlier this month.
