I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I still think of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag‘s naval combat as being of the greatest things to ever come out of that series. Taking part in roaring battles on the high seas, plundering ruined vessels and discovering tiny islands filled with treasure — it was kind of a dream. It made sense that Ubisoft would want to split that facet of the game off into something entirely self-contained and with Skull and Bones, they’ve done exactly that. When Ubisoft announced that their long-running Assassin’s Creed would be taking a year off to afford the team some extra time for development, I was all for it. The series had needed a break for a long while. So to say I was excited to see what an extra year of development has been able to give the team on Assassin’s Creed Origins would be to undersell it. I was not disappointed.

I was able to play Gran Turismo Sport during my visit to the PlayStation E3 booth this morning. Both were conducted from within the confines of a pretend car body, outfitted with a top-of-the-line racing wheel and pedals. As you read this hands on piece, please bear that in mind. I can’t comment on how the game plays with a controller in either 2D or VR as I simply haven’t been able to try it that way yet.
What surprised me most about playing this way, however, was how much sense Gran Turismo Sport actually made to me as a VR title, particularly with the over-the-top setup Sony had sprung for in the media booth.
Matterfall revealed itself to me in stages, and each reveal was a little surprise. Housemarque’s sci-fi shooter throws a lot of different concepts at the wall and, for me, at least with the short window I had with the game, each of them stuck. I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever truly get Pokken Tournament. As a fighting game idea, it’s great! In practice, at least for some, it’s a spectacular fighter, full of surprise twists and reversals of fortune.
