Jurassic World enjoys the biggest opening in history at the North American Box Office

Fans can’t get enough dinosaur action, it seems, as the franchise Jurassic Park returned with its fourth installment over the weekend with the highly anticipated Jurassic World. It’s been a long time coming and it seems that the wait for Universal executives has paid off. The film just broke all box office records in North America bringing in US$208.8 million over the weekend, with an estimated US$315.3 million coming in from the overseas market as well. This would also make it the biggest international opening weekend of all time, surpassing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

Exact Australian numbers have yet to be released (we’re expecting them later today), however it’s anticipated to top our domestic box office as well and be a solid part of that record breaking tally.

It’s not a huge jump in front of the prior record holder, The Avengers, which brought in $US207.4 million in 2012, but a record is a record – and Universal executives have got to be happy. Between this, Furious 7 (which has brought in $1.5 billion internationally) and other smaller but significant success stories like Pitch Perfect 2, it’s been a great year for the studio.

And compared to the Jurassic Park III opening weekend in 2001 (under US$50 million, not adjusted for inflation), it seems that the franchise’s popularity has only gotten better with age. In one weekend, World has already surpassed the entire box office gross of its predecessor.

Though off to a running start, it will face fierce competition from the long awaited Pixar film Inside Out, which releases this week in both the US and Australia.
