Film Review: Masterminds (M15+) (USA, 2016) never hits its target sucessfully

When “based on a true story” flashes across the screen in the beginning moments of Masterminds, you can’t help but think that it’s trying to squeeze an easy laugh out of its audience. Somehow, whether you believe it or not, Jared Hess’s comedy adopts its premise from an actual robbery that took place in the late 1990’s where an unlikely employee of an armoured car cash handling service successfully pulled off a robbery to the tune of $17 million dollars. Given the story Hess and writers Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer and Emily Spivey had to work with, not to mention the hoard of comedic acting talent involved, you would think the final filmic adaption would be worthy of your time.... DVD Review: No Escape (MA15+) (USA, 2015)

Despite its incredibly generic title and direct-to-DVD status, No Escape is a surprisingly effective thriller elevated by its above-average cast and fuelled by its ability to maintain tension from start to finish. Director John Erik Dowdle is no stranger to lacing his films with palpable tension (the found-footage horror outing Quarantine and M. Night Shyamalan produced thriller Devil are two of his most noteworthy credits) so the plotline of an American family marked for death in a foreign country is one easily handled with the director, and his co-writer brother Drew Dowdle, presenting us with a seriously slick production that appears far more monetarily supported than what the filmmakers actually had to work with.... Film Review: Zoolander 2 (USA, 2016)

When the first Zoolander film hit the cinema in 2001, the world was a very different place.  Smartphone technology went as far as colour screens (pretty sure we were all still playing that weird snake game on our phones waiting at the bus stop with our travel 10s), but with zero online connectivity.  Social media was like, what, ICQ or something?  And selfies?  They weren’t even a thing.  But the cult of celebrity worship had begun, and Zoolander writers Ben Stiller, Drake Sather and John Hamburg used the film to mock the celebrity and fashion worlds, with model idiot Derek Zoolander (Stiller) and fellow male model Hansel (Owen Wilson) embarking on a mission to save the Prime Minister of Micronesia (the President of Malaysia), whose anti-sweat shop stance angers big-name fashion designers, including one Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell).  ... Justin Bieber dies and Mugatu returns in the first official trailer for Zoolander 2

Some terrible madman is going around killing the world’s most beautiful people, including Usher and Justin Bieber, in Zoolander 2, forcing them to leave the world one last selfie with Derek Zoolander’s (Ben Stiller) signature look, Blue Steel. Such is life in the Zoolander universe as we once again take a close look at the life of a washed-up male model idiot, who must re-team with his BFF Hansel (Owen Wilson) and hot-therefore-trustworthy Penelope Cruz to infiltrate the fashion world and (probably) save the day. It’s all in this hilarious trailer full of spilled latte’s, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kristen Wiig, which has been released by Paramount Pictures today and is already sitting at over one million views on Youtube....
