PlayStation Plus giving away Modern Warfare 2 and Fall Guys for free

PlayStation Plus

PlayStation have confirmed their August 2020 line up of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

August will bring a little single-player action in Activision’s recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered. For those looking for multiplayer fun, the excellent battle royale indie Fall Guys will be your new favourite after-work game.

Modern Warfare 2 Remastered released earlier this year and contains the entire campaign from one of the series’ most beloved entries. The game is notable for a couple of reasons: First, it was the game almost retired the Call of Duty name until fan outcry restored it to prominence. This writer remembers it well because I was working at EB Games when the original game was released. We spent months explaining to confused customers that this mystery game called Modern Warfare 2 was actually the sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The whole thing was a mess and Activision were right to put the CoD name back on the box at the last minute.

Second, the huge controversy that blew up around “No Russian,” a level in the game that allowed players to take an active role in a terrorist attack. Though players could choose to move through the level without firing a single shot at innocents, Infinity Ward (perhaps pre-empting the controversy) included an option to skip it entirely if the player so desired. This only added to the furore. Players and media alike agreed that if a developer included material like this in their game that they should either justify it or remove it entirely rather than handwaving it away with a level skip. You can now play the level for yourself and make up your own mind.

Anyway, enough of the history lesson. Let’s talk about something much nicer, which is Fall Guys. It’s so great. Seriously, watch this trailer:

“Stumble towards greatness.” Fantastic. Modern art.

You can grab Modern Warfare 2 Remastered later today and it will be free until August 31. Fall Guys will go free starting August 4 and remain so until August 31. You’ll need to have an active PlayStation Plus subscription to access the downloads, but as long as your sub stays active they’re yours to keep.

Friendly reminder that there’s still time to download July’s freebies — NBA 2K21 and Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration and Erica, all of which are available until August 3.
