A Tricky Treat is a short film. Like, 3 minute type of short. But that only means that you should free up 3 minutes to watch it because it nails everything it sets out to do.
Written by Kamal John Iskander and directed by short film veteran Patricia Chica, A Tricky Treat subverts what we’ve come to expect from the, at times, cliche horror genre. Given that it’s so short, I’ll leave plot details scarce, but when a man wakes up in a dark, unknown location, chained and frightened, he finds himself the victim of a hilarious and unique situation.
It also gets extremely gory and the make up effects here are brilliant. I’d love to see what Chica is capable of in a full length feature because her ability to simultaneously gross out here audience while making them laugh is impressive.
You might see the twist at the end coming but it doesn’t water down its eventual reveal.
A Tricky Treat is a wonderful little comedy/horror short with a fresh, twisted theme, fantastic lighting, great gore and a satisfying twist.
