Streaming Review: The Prince of Egypt is a visual splendour fit for a king

Biblical stories have always been a favourite amongst theatregoers just ask Joseph with his dream coat and Godspell. The Prince of Egypt is no exception. The story – best known as an animated Dreamworks film – also makes for an epic and fun live theatre show, whether you’re watching it on the stage or streaming it in the comfort of your home.

The current production was recorded live at the Dominion Theatre in London. It was recorded amidst COVID lockdowns, a nice symmetry considering it also references plagues. The pacing is a little slower than the original film and there are some new scenes and numbers, but fans of Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell) should rejoice.

The story is an ancient one adapted from a book by Philip La Zebnik. It covers the life of Moses – it sees his humble beginnings when he is hidden by his birth mother to avoid certain death, as the killings of first-born sons had been ordered. Then, he is a young Egyptian prince and step-brother to Ramses, the heir to the throne. He is finally a prophet- saving the Hebrews by leading them out of Egypt.

A large company of over 60 people leads this production, and they are all used to great effect. When things like the parting sea and burning bush are required, Sam Cheesman’s choreography shines through in each dancer’s graceful movements, which adds to the visual sumptuousness. The songs are also wonderful- “When You Believe” is simply inspired and not just because it was a duet between Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Film Favourites “All I ever Wanted” and “The Plagues” also hit the spot.

The Prince of Egypt is a spiritual lesson about strength and resilience. The production is a fun one full of much colour and spectacle. You can enjoy the visual splendour in this musical show because ultimately this is one that is fit for a king.
