The Mummy reboot gets its first trailer as the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe officially launches

Another year, another new franchise reboot. This time it’s for The Mummy, following on from the Brendan Fraser fronted trilogy of the same name. Directed by Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us), this time around the series will star Tom Cruise as our lead, Nick Morton, with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) as “The Mummy” and Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll. Today we got to see our first glimpse of the film as Universal released its first trailer.

The film, which will be released in Australia in June 2017, will not only reboot the iconic franchise with a new cast and storyline, but it will also launch Universal’s second “Cinematic Universe”, to compete with the likes of Warner’s DC Extended Universe and Disney’s Marvel Cinematic and Television Universes.

Dubbed the “Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe”, the franchise will see classic characters reborn for a run of films over the next few years, that will see characters like Crowe’s Jekyll appear over multiple storylines.

We can also expect reboots of classic Universal Monsters and characters like Wolf ManInvisible Man (to be played by Johnny Depp), Van Helsing, the Bride of Frankenstein (Javier Bardem is expected to play Frankenstein) and the Creature From The Black Lagoon. Dracula is also expected to fit into the mix somewhere along the line.

The Monsters universe follow the launch of Universal’s shared fictional universe for Godzilla and King Kong, which launched with Godzilla in 2014 and will continue with King Kong: Skull Island next year.

Here’s a bit more about The Mummy:

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The film also stars Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World) and Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson).

The Mummy hits Australian cinemas on 8th June 2017
