The National 2017: New Australian Art is now underway across three of Sydney’s premier cultural institutions

The National 2017: New Australian Art, the first exhibition in a six year partnership, is now underway at three of Sydney’s premier cultural institutions – The Art Gallery of NSW, Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.

Presented concurrently across the three institutions, The National 2017 features work by emerging, mid-career and established Australian artists, with the exhibition showcasing new and commissioned works encompassing a diverse range of artistic mediums. The exhibition also prominently features work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists across the three locations.

The National 2017 can be experienced both as a large scale single exhibition, with key points of dialogue and connection between the three locations. However, each of the three venues have a particular focus, at the Art Gallery of NSW, for example, the focus is on the forces of social change, with the artists work attempting to open up new conversations with history and politics. Meanwhile at Carriageworks the artistic focus is on the hybridity of Australian identity, and questions the complex process through which we shape our identities. Whilst at MCA, the artists drawn from across the country, consider recurrent subject matters, materials or the process of art making.

The exhibitions is also supported by a dedicated website which offers a comprehensive record of the artist participation across the inaugural exhibition, including artist biographies and portraits, as well as curatorial essays about the artist’s work. From late April, the website will also provide curator commentary on each of the works via both audio file and AUSLAN video. There will also be documentary films available on thirteen of the participating artists and their projects.

For more information on the exhibition and for a full list of the participating artists visit the exhibition website. The National 2017 runs from March 30th until June 18th at MCA, June 25th at Carriageworks and July 16th at the Art Galley of New South Wales. Exhibition attendees are encouraged to interact with the exhibition on social media using the #NationalAU
