The Rise and Fall of the Video Game Film

Recently released photos of Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider film have sparked much attention and interest for the newest in a long line of video game films. By their very nature, video game films spark scepticism, and a hefty dose of it already accompanies the release of the film. The original Tomb Raider films are largely abysmal, but the newest entry in the series aims to change the face of video game films, much like Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft before it. Perhaps it’s only cynicism that colours my view, but given the slew of failures in their wake, isn’t it time to give up on blockbuster video game adaptations?... Continue Reading

Video Games Review: World of Warcraft: Legion (PC, 2016)

12 years. 12 years is a long time to carry an MMO, or any game at all. I should know, I’ve been playing the thing since launch. Having learnt from some of the mistakes made in Warlords of Draenor, Blizzard have ensured that expansion 6 of World of Warcraft takes the game in a very healthy  direction in a vast number of ways. Legion brings a new level cap of 110, the new Demon hunter class, a new continent, a whole new set of character animations and a great deal of gameplay improvements. Film Review: Warcraft: The Beginning (M15+) (USA, 2016)

As someone completely unschooled in the world of Warcraft, I entered the filmic adaptation of the popular video game franchise with an open mind and no expectations.  On its own merits it’s a perfectly serviceable action/fantasy opus that’s heavy on CGI and spectacle but short on much else – not that that is necessarily a bad thing.  A movie like Warcraft isn’t made to tell a fascinating story or keep viewers emotionally invested, it’s here purely to entertain, and though a lot of what transpires on-screen has been seen before (elements of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Avatar and Game of Thrones can arguably be noted) it doesn’t detract from the film overall....
