Video Games Review: ReCore (Xbox One, 2016)

There was a period between 2002 and 2007, lets call it the post-Ocarina of Time era, where action adventure games found a formula that worked and then stuck to it like glue. A plucky protagonist visits many, varied locations, delves into dungeons, collect treasure and items, upgrades their skills and eventually finds themselves in a showdown with the story’s big bad. ReCore operates wholly in the tradition of these games, and that may be where it will either firmly gain or immediately lose your interest. Video Games Review: Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens (PS4, 2016)

I feel like I owe The Force Awakens a pretty significant debt. It’s not only brought the Star Wars franchise back to life in the post-prequels era but now it’s returning the license to the Lego series to lift them out of their slump following Lego Marvel’s Avengers. This new entry in the Lego series is amongst the its very best — fun and funny, smartly paced and demonstrating a clear desire to bring something new to the series. Video Games Review: Mirror’s Edge Catalyst (PS4, 2016)

The fact that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst exists at all is a minor miracle. When the original Mirror’s Edge released in 2008, it sank like a stone in the sales charts. Despite clunky combat and some glaring clipping issues, it still managed to amass a small fan base who enjoyed its willingness to try something new. Can Catalyst give the series a new lease on life? Blizzard will update the PC version of their world-beating team shooter Overwatch today, adding the hotly-anticipated Competitive Play option.
