Games Review: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Switch, 2018)

Wolfenstein II‘s latest Nazi-stomping iteration was one of the biggest and best FPS releases of last year, praised for its original script, compelling characters and bucketloads of aggressive, absorbing gameplay; the title — officially Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus — once again reinvented a classic franchise and continued the quality from The New Order and The Old Blood. It’s alt-history context reimagines the most terrifying World War II outcome imaginable, in that the Nazis have won and taken over the entire world, United States included. Cue story about uprising and American revolution and all that jazz — not the most creative framework, but one which was proven by it’s near-perfect pacing and engaging story. The Iris’ 2017 Game of the Year Top 10

The year’s end is upon us once more and that means yearly wrap pieces. It’s been a pretty amazing year in the games industry. Microsoft launched the most powerful console ever made, and Nintendo released an altogether new one. We saw AAA disasters, runaway indie successes and an combative relationship with microtransactions as publishers figure out how to include revenue streams that don’t rub players the wrong way. With that in mind, lets take a look at what The Iris team thought ranked as their Top 5 games for 2017. Continue reading The Iris’ 2017 Game of the Year Top 10

Games Review: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Xbox One, 2017): Complexity and nuance with a hint of dead Nazi

Oh boy, where does one start with an experience like the one Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus offers? The second game in a week to prove that the single-player experience as we know it is still very much alive and well, Wolfenstein II is the kind of shooter we haven’t had in a while — one with a lot on its mind and a willingness, some might say a fevered desire, to push its audience’s buttons. “Come and fu*kin’ get me, you fascist Nazi pigs.” The Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus launch trailer is here

The marketing for Bethesda’s Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus has been among the year’s absolute best. After finding itself in the peculiar position of having to defend its core tenet of “Fuck Nazis” in a world where white nationalists rally in the open, the game has steered aggressively into any and all online resistance. It’s final trailer ahead of release reaffirms its perfectly reasonable position with both a wink and clenched fist. Games Hands On: Long Live Terror-Billy in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Now, more than ever, we need a game like Wolfenstein II – a game that doesn’t shy away from making strong, political statements, that deals respectfully with the ramifications of mental illness and PTSD, but mostly importantly – lets you kill a whole bunch of Nazis. If I wasn’t already excited about the title, what I got to play last week reminded me why it’s one of my most anticipated titles of October. First Preview: We take Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus AKA Nazi Killing Simulator 3000 for a test ride

If there’s one thing that 2017 has taught us, it’s that Nazi punching is back in style. Given that’s the case, Wolfenstein II has arrived with most fashionable timing.
