Telltale Games, a developer known for narrative-focused episodic games like The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead and Tales from the Borderlands has laid off a whopping 25% of its entire workforce this morning. The retrenchments, which leave 90 staff members without jobs, come as part of an internal restructuring that will see the company running a smaller team and releasing fewer games.
The hope, according to a prepared statement from Telltale, was to make them “more competitive as a developer and publisher of groundbreaking story-driven gaming experiences with an emphasis on high quality in the years ahead.”
“Our industry has shifted in tremendous ways over the past few years,” reads a statement from Telltale Games CEO Pete Hawley in the official release. “The realities of the environment we face moving forward demand we evolve, as well, reorienting our organization with a focus on delivering fewer, better games with a smaller team.”
Telltale doesn’t expect the layoffs to impact any previously announced projects like the recently announced Spider-man series or the second season of The Wolf Among Us.
The release goes on to state that Telltale’s new plan is to bring all of its development internally “over to more proven technologies that will fast-track innovation in its core products.” Take that particularly corporate-sounding statement as you will.
Telltale’s current ongoing projects include the second season of both Minecraft: Story Mode and Batman, the first season of Guardians of the Galaxy and the fourth and final season of their acclaimed series based on The Walking Dead.
