Telltale Games have released a number of screens from their forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy adventure title, their first in conjunction with Marvel Comics, but acknowledge that their story is entirely separate from the popular Marvel Studios films.

Rather than drawing on the original Guardians of the Galaxy film, or its follow up Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (which releases in Australian theatres on April 25), it seems that Telltale are looking to the long-running and often underappreciated Guardians comics for inspiration.

As such, Telltale have opted not to try and get the film cast to reprise their characters. Instead, the team will be voiced by a whole new cast of both up-and-coming and top-tier voice actors.

Scott Porter of Friday Night Lights and Telltale’s The Walking Dead will play Star Lord. Emily O’Brien of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will play Gamora. Nolan North, best known for playing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series, will play Rocket. Brandon Paul Eells of Watch Dogs will play Drax and Adam Harrington of League of Legends and Telltale’s excellent The Wolf Among Us will play Groot.

The screens Telltale have released ahead of their panel at PAX East this weekend mark something of a departure for the studio — characters are rendered realistically and without Telltale’s now-signature heavily-stylised comic book art design. A trailer and release date are expected to be revealed during the panel, which will be at 9am AEST, 10am AEDT and 7am WAST Saturday morning on the official PAX2 Twitch channel.

PAX East won’t be the developer’s only convention appearance next week, they’ll also be headed to South By Southwest on March 17 where fans can get their hands on the game at the SXSW Gaming festival.
