Amidst all of the superheroes and turbocharged cars destroying box office records in America, a milestone has been reached down here in Australia with our homegrown films.
Aussie films have had the most successful year to date at the box office as of October 4th. Indeed, one can attribute much of this to the highly lucrative Mad Max: Fury Road but there have been a slew of heartwarming dramas, family flicks and even documentaries that have chipped in too.
Mad Max made a staggering $21.6 million in Australia and its $374.7 million wordwide should not go unnoticed. The Water Diviner played a huge part too, raking in $10.18 million while Paper Planes came in close with $9.65 million.
Sally Caplan, Screen Australia’s head of production has said that there is a big emphasis on family films right now and that might explain why Oddball (which is still currently sitting at 4th spot) has made $8.12 million.
It is a wonderful time for Australian cinema and with more and more talented filmmakers and upcoming projects such as the recently greenlit Mad Max sequels on the horizon, hopefully this trend continues.
