The Simpsons cartoonist Matt Groening to make Australian Debut at Sydney Graphic Festival in November

Cartoon legend Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, is coming to Australia for the first time to present at the sixth GRAPHIC festival weekend at Sydney Opera House. Matt Groening will be headlining the event, which will also see talks from Lynda Barry (Ernie Pook’s Comeek, One! Hundred! Demons!)

Groening’s debut Australia trip will see him on stage for two talks including ‘Secrets of The Simpsons, And A couple of Milhouse Fun Facts’ which will showcase rare animated clips and Simpsons secrets.

“The most intense Simpsons fanatics I’ve met are from Australia, so I’m coming to Sydney to check out all you lunatics,” Groening said ahead of his Australian debut. “I’m going to share stories of the making of The Simpsons and show embarrassing home movies and rarely-seen animation, including oddball outtakes and uncensored Itchy & Scratchy cartoons.”

He will also join Lynda Barry on stage for ‘Love, Hate & Comics: The Friendship That Would Not Die’ which discusses a relationship that dates back to the halcyon days of underground comic strips.

The festival lineup will also see Star Wars creator George Lucas’ THX 1138 re-scored live by Asian Dub Foundation, and two film premieres from storyteller Neil Gaiman. The concert hall will be transformed into a grand theatre for the screening of ‘Dream Dangerously’ and ‘Likely stories’, a collection of some of Gaiman’s best short stories adapted for the screen.

Tickets for the GRAPHIC festival will be on sale on Friday the 16th of September from 9am. The festival will begin on Friday the 4th until Saturday the 5th of November. There will be various free, as well as paid events, so start saving your dollarydoos!
