Geralt. G-Man. My dude. My gravelly-voiced brother. You have come home to me at last. Please hold still while I hit you with an anime sword.
In his first outing since the end of The Witcher III‘s Blood & Wine expansion, Geralt of Rivia will find himself of the stage of history, weilding his twin swords against the wider roster in Soul Calibur VI.
The reveal, rumours for which began swirling a few weeks ago, came as Bandai Namco ramped up the marketing push for the game overnight. You can see Geralt in action in the announce trailer embedded above.
Geralt’s appearance follows a long history of Soul Calibur including special characters as a way of enticing wary players in. Soul Calibur II legendarily gave Gamecube players the ability to play as Link from The Legend of Zelda, while PlayStation 2 players were saddled with Tekken‘s Heihachi and Xbox owners got stuck with Todd MacFarlane’s Spawn? For some reason? Xbox owners really got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on that one. Soul Calibur IV, released around the time, released around the time Star Wars Episode III was in theatres, added Yoda for PlayStation 3 owners and Darth Vader for Xbox 360, with Starkiller, the lead character from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed added as DLC.
Personally, I’m just happy to have Geralt back in any form. If I can’t have him in a new RPG or Witcher expac, I’ll take a guest spot in a fighting game for sure.
Soul Calibur VI launches later this year on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
